Journalism @ Dawson College

Journalism at Dawson

At Dawson College, there are several ways to explore journalism and get involved in student media. Each year, some Dawson students go on to study journalism at Concordia University and other universities. But you don’t have to plan a career in journalism to get experience reporting, making media, and telling stories while you’re here.

Here are some of the opportunities available at Dawson.

ALC Journalism Minor

ALC students can add a Journalism Minor to their program and develop practical skills in reporting, research, interviewing, writing, photography, video, audio, and digital media.

Students pursuing this minor take courses in news writing, feature writing, web journalism, and the ethics of journalism. Courses generally follow a set sequence, beginning with Writing News Stories in the first semester. Depending on course availability, students may be able to substitute a photography or creative writing course for Ethics of Journalism.

Get Involved

The Plant

All Dawson students can contribute to The Plant, Dawson’s independent student newspaper. Pitch a story, submit your work, take photos, make a video, or get involved with the team.

Guest Lectures & Events

Hear from working journalists and media professionals through guest lectures, talks, workshops, and other events.

Cinema-Communications Students

Students in the Cinema-Communications profile can work on journalism projects as part of their production classes. Depending on the course and project, students may research and report stories, conduct interviews, take photographs, and produce documentary films, podcasts, social media content, and stories for the web.

These projects give students opportunities to work with different forms of journalism and digital media, often developing a story from the initial idea and research through production and publication.
